Black Friday is an informal name used to describe the day after Thanksgiving. It's often the busiest shopping day of the year because it kicks off the holiday season. 

The origin of "Black Friday" differs across many sources on the website. These vary from:

1)  In the 1950s the police in Philadelphia initially used the term "Black Friday" to refer to heavy, disruptive traffic on the day after Thanksgiving caused by the volume of people visiting the sales, viewing the holiday decorations and the hosting of the Army-Navy football game. 

2) The black portion of the name, "Black Friday" relates to businesses recording their losses in red ink and gains in black and the day has been considered the highest profit day.

While this doesn't have any roots in Australia, the term and sales have flowed across to ocean to us as well. Officially Black Friday is the 25 November.
